From Kyoto to Your Cup: A Guide to Japanese Matcha
A little green powder, with centuries of tradition behind it.
A little green powder, with centuries of tradition behind it.
Matcha has become part of modern café culture around the world, but its story goes much deeper than the latte in your cup.
From its origins in Japan to the traditional tea practices that have shaped how it is enjoyed today, matcha is a tea with a unique character, flavour and ritual.
At SMATCHA, we source our ceremonial grade matcha from Kyoto, Japan, bringing a carefully crafted Japanese tea experience to London.
But what exactly is matcha, and what makes a good matcha?
What Is Matcha?
Matcha is a finely ground Japanese green tea made from specially cultivated tea leaves.
Unlike regular green tea, where the leaves are steeped and then discarded, matcha is whisked directly into water. This means you enjoy the whole tea leaf in powdered form.
This is what gives matcha its distinctive vibrant green colour, rich umami flavour and smooth texture.
Why Is Matcha from Kyoto So Special?
Kyoto has a long and respected history of Japanese tea cultivation and tea culture.
Generations of tea-growing traditions, careful cultivation and craftsmanship have helped shape the character of Japanese matcha.
Before harvesting, tea plants used for high-quality matcha are typically shaded from direct sunlight. This encourages the development of chlorophyll and helps create the deep green colour and characteristic umami that matcha is known for.
The leaves are then carefully processed and ground into an exceptionally fine powder.
At SMATCHA, our matcha comes from Kyoto, Japan, selected for its quality, vibrant colour and balanced flavour.
